‘Oncology is a truly great career to work in. Every patient I have ever met, I feel that I have been able to help, even if its just explaining the seriousness of the condition. The patients and their carers are going through an extremely distressing times in their lives, and are highly receptive to medical advice and intervention, which I find very satisfying. Patients with different cancer have very different social backgrounds, due to the risk factors, so you can always find a career pathway to suit. For me the most interesting angle is how quickly things are changing in clinical practice driven by better understanding of genetics, genomics, immunology and by better imaging and treatments.  Prostate cancer has become a chronic disease and the outcomes are continuing to improve.’ – Professor John Staffurth
